On a mangé au French Pastry School, appris de l'histoire française et de ses effets sur la ville actuelle, goûté le meilleur fromage français au <a href="http://chicagofrancophone.blogspot.com/2012/04/la-gastronomie-francaise-chicago.html">Chicago French Market</a>, et qui pourrait oublier, <a href="http://chicagofrancophone.blogspot.com/2012/04/la-culture-francaise-lart-et.html">la belle architecture</a> de la ville! Cette aventure a été merveilleuse et je vous remercie de l'avoir appréciée avec moi. Cependant, j'ai seulement commencé l'expérience, maintenant, c'est à vous de continuer cette aventure. Je me rappelle de mon séjour à Paris quand j'avais l'habitude de traverser le pont de la Concorde, le pont construit par les pierres de la Bastille. L'histoire est visible pour tout le monde à voir. C'est pareil à Chicago. Prenez un moment pour voir le monde autour de vous et apprenez son histoire.</span><br />

Il y a beaucoup de personnes influentes partout dans l'histoire américaine qui était reliées à la vie française. Benjamin Franklin était l'Ambassadeur de France et a aidé à négocier le Traité de Paris. A Philadelphie, Stephen Girard, né Etienne Girard de Bordeaux, possédait le First Bank of the United States et a aidé à financer la guerre de 1812 contre les Anglais. Aujourd'hui on peut trouver son nom sur l'une des routes les plus célèbres de Philadelphie, l'Avenue de Girard. Les Etats-Unis sont un très grand pays avec beaucoup d'histoire.</span></div>

Je me rappelle la première journée où je suis arrivé à Lake Forest College. Je me spécialisais en science politique et en étude du monde Islamique. J'ai suivi un ou deux cours en français, mais pas beaucoup. Ma conseillère <a href="http://www.lakeforest.edu/academics/faculty/gayle/">Carol Gayle</a> m'a recommandé que je suive <a href="http://www.lakeforest.edu/academics/programs/languages/">un cours de français</a> avec Prof Jean-Luc Garneau et il a changé ma vie. Je me rappelle l'ambiance; Toute la journée on écoutait la même chanson, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msjbPv4ZTc8"><i>Moi j'ai quitté mon pays bleu</i></a> par Roger Whittaker . Je me rappelle le premier poème que j'ai lu en français, <i>Chanson d'Automne </i>par Paul Verlaine. Merci, <a href="http://www.lakeforest.edu/academics/faculty/garneau/">Prof. Garneau</a>. Je me rappelle le premier moment quand j'ai décidé que je voulais me spécialiser en français; c'était pendant un cours que j'ai suivi appelé la France contemporaine avec Prof. Hahn. Elle est la raison pour laquelle j'ai écrit ce blog. Merci, <a href="http://www.lakeforest.edu/academics/faculty/hahn/">Prof Hahn</a>. Je me rappelle les profs qui m'ont aidé toute la journée...les profs qui m'ont dit: "Ne laisse pas tomber! C'est en forgeant qu'on devient forgeron!" C'est à cause d'eux que je suis allé à Paris où ma vie a changé pour toujours, et à cause d'eux que j'ai travaillé à l'Assemblée Nationale, et c'est la raison que je suis qui je suis. Ce blog est pour eux, c'est un symbole de ma reconnaissance, avec un message: je ne vous oublierai jamais. </span><br />

y avait près de 50.000 participants y compris des écrivains, des peintres, des
scientifiques, et des hommes d’état de partout dans le monde. Il y avait 18 membres
du Conseil de Direction au début. En 1897, un groupe de Chicagoans a fondé L’Alliance
Française de Chicago avec <a href="http://www.uchicago.edu/index.shtml">l’Université de Chicago</a>. Au début, L’Alliance Française se trouvait au<a href="http://www.chicagohistoryjournal.com/2007/11/living-history.html"> Fine Arts Building</a>, situé à 410 South Michigan
Avenue. On a fondé L’Alliance afin de promouvoir la culture française et d’allier
la communauté française qui s’est intéressée au sujet de la
littérature française et de la France en général. Il y avait 4 départements en
1908 : L’Ecole (le lycée), les Conférences, la Bibliothèque, et le C</span><span style="line-height: 32px;">ercle</span><span style="line-height: 200%;">. La Bibliothèque avait la plus grande collection des livres français aux
Etats-Unis.</span></span><br />

mondiale en travaillant avec la Croix Rouge Américaine. Les participants ont fait des pansements et les ont envoyés à l’Angleterre afin d’aider les réfugies français.</span><br />

L’Alliance Française de Chicago et la Maison-Française, l’un de ses compétiteurs. En 1980, le siège social de l’Alliance

Ce siège social est une maison du dix-neuvième siècle. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Je n'avais pas mangé toute la journée quand je suis arrivé à la French Pastry School de Chicago. Il pleuvait donc j'étais content quand j'ai vu la porte à tambour à l'entrée du Chicago City Schools. En 1995, deux grands chefs appelés <a href="http://www.frenchpastryschool.com/about/bio/1782/jacquy-pfeiffer">Chef Jacquy Pfeiffer</a> et <a href="http://www.frenchpastryschool.com/about/bio/1564/s%C3%A9bastien-canonne">Chef Sébastien Cannone</a> ont fondé la French Pastry School. Quand je suis entré dans le bâtiment, j'étais agréablement surpris de rencontrer et serrer les mains du directeur des opérations, <a href="http://www.frenchpastryschool.com/about/bio/1792/franco-pacini">Monsieur Franco Pacini</a>. Au troisième étage, il y avait un groupe d' étudiants qui m'ont fait visiter l'école. Il y a surtout trois programmes à la French Pastry School. <a href="http://www.frenchpastryschool.com/programs/lag">L'Art du Gâteau</a>,<a href="http://www.frenchpastryschool.com/programs/lap"> L'Art de la Pâtisserie</a>, et<a href="http://www.frenchpastryschool.com/programs/lab"> L'art de la Boulangerie</a>. Les cours durent entre 8 semaines et 24 semaines, dépendant du programme.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: center;">L'une des salles, que j'ai eu l'opportunité de voir, s'appelle la salle des Gâteaux (The Cake Room). Immédiatement, j'ai pensé à l'émission Iron Chef! Je pouvais voir que cette école était sérieuse. Pendant la visite, il y avait une très grande salle des gâteaux; mais pas de gâteaux typiques, ces gâteaux étaient simplement étonnants! Ils étaient grands, petits, vert, orange, à l'envers, et farfelus; Après avoir vu cette salle, je ne regarderai plus jamais un gâteau de la même façon. </span><br />

Ils ont préparé des madeleines aux miel et citron, des bonbons au chocolat, des tuiles, et un ananas rôti. J'admets que tout était délicieux. Puis, ils m'ont donné un sac de cadeaux. A l'intérieur, il y avait du pain, un pot de conserve, des bonbons, et un muffin. J'étais très content de l'expérience, et je recommande que vous y alliez pour leurs rendre visite. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Quand on pense à la nourriture de Chicago, il faut dire qu'il y a beaucoup de types de nourriture qui ne sont pas vraiment français: Le Hot-Dog style Chicago, la pizza "deep-dish", le saucisson polonais, et n'oublions pas McDonalds qui est né tout près de Chicago à Des Plaines, en Illinois. Cependant, avec un peu d'effort et un oeil vigilant, c'est possible de trouver de la bonne nourriture française à Chicago. En fait, j'ai trouvé qu'il y a beaucoup de lieux à Chicago où on peut goûter de la nourriture française et avoir une expérience dans une atmosphère typique d'un restaurant français à Paris ou ailleurs. Alors, suivez-moi pendant je vous raconte ma recherche et mes expériences sur comment je me suis mis en quête de la vraie gastronomie française à Chicago.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Quand je pense à la culture française, la première chose à laquelle je pense, c'est la grande quantité de fromages différents, suivie des baguettes françaises croustillantes et légères, et finalement, les desserts. En France, il y beaucoup de fromageries, boulangeries, et pâtisseries. Quand je suis rentré aux Etats-Unis, j'ai fait une recherche sur google afin de trouver une boulangerie et la seule boulangerie que j'ai trouvée, était Panera Bread. J'étais triste, mais je n'allais pas laisser tomber cette quête! Je me rappelle bien mon trajet à Ogalvie Transportation Center. J'avais faim et je voulais quelque chose à manger. Je me rappelle que j'ai pensé, "Waaa! Qu'est-ce que c'est!?" Le Président, Bob Wislow, envisageait le développement d'un marché qui serait similaire aux marchés trouvés à Milwaukee, Seattle, Cleveland, et New York. A ce moment-là, ils ont décidé de signer un accord avec la famille de Bensidoun qui gère près de 80 marchés à Paris et ailleurs. Par exemple, la famille gère 13 marchés en plein air y compris le Wheaton French Market et le Wilmette Market. Là, on peut trouver une grande variété de fromages français et de vins français. Une journée n'est pas complète sans baguette et Camembert et Pastoral Artisan a le meilleur Camembert de Normandie à mon avis. Cependant, j'étais le plus surpris quand j'y ai trouvé mon fromage préféré, <a href="http://www.cniel.com/prodlait/AOC/Tourai.html">le sainte-maure-de-Touraine</a>, un très bon fromage français d'Indre et Loire. </span></div>

Leur but était de créer un super-marché qui comprend les meilleurs produits de partout dans le monde. Ils sont particulièrement connus pour leur boulangerie, l'un des boulangeries les plus connues à Chicago. Ils notent qu'ils n'utilisent ni levure commerciale ni machines dans la cuisson de leur pain. J'ai goûté un peu de leurs baguettes, et il faut dire que le goût était parfait. Cependant, il y a beaucoup plus d'exemples similaires. Si on est intéressé au mouvement impressionniste, le musée d'Orsay possède la plus grande collection des oeuvres impressionnistes du monde. A Chicago, il y a un musée qui ressemble au musée d'Orsay parce qu'il a aussi une grande collection d'oeuvres impressionnistes et post-impressionnistes, y compris des peintures de Frédéric Bazille, Eugène-Louis Boudin, Gustave Caillebotte, Paul Cézanne, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, et Georges Seurat. Le musée s'appelle l'institut d'art de Chicago (The Art Institute of Chicago).</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.artic.edu/aic/">L'Institut d'art de Chicago</a> est le deuxième plus grand musée d'art en Amérique du Nord. Le bâtiment était construit afin d'éblouir les participants de l'exposition universelle de 1893 à Chicago. L'institut a embauché Shepley, Rutan, et Coolidge de Boston pour concevoir le bâtiment au style des beaux-arts, le style appris à <a href="http://www.arte.tv/fr/3880028,CmC=3880030.html">l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris</a>. A l'entrée de l'Institut d'art de Chicago, il y deux statues en bronze de lions construites par Edward Kerneys, un sculpteur qui a étudié à Paris en 1878. On dit que les oeuvres d'art de Kerneys étaient influencées par le sculpteur français appelé </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Antoine Louis Barye. Enfin, c'est-à-dire que le bâtiment de l'Institut d'art de Chicago a vraiment été influencé surtout par la France. </span><br />

Là on trouve <a href="http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/50909?search_id=1">la tête d'un apôtre</a>. Pourquoi est-ce que c'est intéressant? Quand vous visitez Paris, je recommande que vous visitiez <a href="http://www.sacred-destinations.com/france/paris-cluny-museum-of-middle-ages">le musée de Cluny</a>. Il y a des statues bizarres des têtes de rois bibliques, trouvé au niveau du site d'excavation en 1977. Pendant la Révolution française de 1789, les citoyens de la France ont pensé que ces têtes étaient <a href="http://www.sacred-destinations.com/france/paris-notre-dame-cathedral">les têtes des rois français</a>. Alors, Ils ont décapité les statues comme ils ont décapité leur rois français. L'une de ces têtes se trouve à l'Institut d'art de Chicago. </span><br />

L'institut d'art de Chicago a l'une des plus grandes collections des oeuvres d'art impressionniste et d'art post-impressionniste du monde. L'un de mes peintres préférés s'appelle Gustave Caillebotte. Il est né à Paris en 1848 et est mort en 1894. Il a conçu la peinture populaire appelée la <a href="http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/20684?search_id=1">Rue de Paris, temps de pluie</a> en 1877. A mon avis, la peinture se caractérise par la tristesse d'une journée sombre sous la pluie à Paris. Je l'adore. </span><br />

Leurs peintures ont été conçues pendant une époque où l'impressionnisme était le style dominant. Au début, on n'a pas bien apprécié l'impressionnisme en France. En fait, l'Académie des Beaux-Arts a rejeté ses oeuvres d'art jusqu'à ce que l'Empereur Napoléon III ait décrété que ses peintures devaient se présenter au public en forme d'une exposition. L'exposition s'est appelée le salon des Refusées. Cette exposition a attiré plus de gens que le Salon de Paris. C'était le point tournant de l'impressionnisme. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">L'une des peintures les plus populaires à l'Institut d'art de Chicago s'appelle <a href="http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/27992">Un dimanche après-midi à l'Île de la Grande Jatte</a> par Georges Seurat. La peinture est importante parce qu'elle contestait directement les pensées et les idées de l'impressionnisme à ce moment-là. On a baptisé la peinture une oeuvre néo-impressionniste. C'est un exemple du pointillisme. Même si tout le monde n'a pas aimé la peinture, <i>Un dimanche après-midi à L'Île de la Grande Jatte</i> a clairement changé l'avenir de l'impressionnisme. </span><br />

Comme habitant de la ville de Philadelphie, je n'étais ni habitué aux grands boulevards de Paris qui étaient conçus par le Baron Haussmann ni à la quantité de parcs de la ville. Heureusement, Chicago se compose de tous ces éléments. A Chicago, l'avenue équivalente s'appelle l'avenue Michigan, connue aussi comme le mile magnifique. A <span style="text-align: center;">435 North Michigan Avenue</span><span style="text-align: center;"> il y a un gratte-ciel appelé <a href="http://www.aviewoncities.com/chicago/tribunetower.htm">la tour Tribune</a>. La tour Tribune était conçue par John Howells et Raymond Hoods en style néo-gothique. Là, on peut voir des exemples de gothique flamboyant y compris des gargouilles et des arcs-boutants. Quand je suis rentré aux Etats-Unis en décembre, je me rappelle que la beauté de Paris et que la culture française me manquaient. Cependant, l'expérience française ne doit pas nécessairement commencer et s'arrêter en France. Pour les étudiants ou les voyageurs qui veulent continuer leur expérience française après leur séjour en France ou à un autre pays francophone, je vous invite de me joindre en explorant la vraie vie française à Chicago. On va faire un coup d'oeil à l'architecture française, à la culture culinaire française, aux similarités entre Paris et Chicago, et au mode de vie d'un Français typique à la grande ville de Chicago. Est-ce que c'est vrai que les Américains mangent avec leurs mains? Est-ce qu'ils disent vraiment Howdy et y'all tous les temps? Est-ce que tous les Américains vont à l'Eglise chaque dimanche? Quelle était la vraie vie américaine? Pour répondre à cette question, j'aimerais discuter le livre qui s'appelle <i>A Parisienne in Chicago</i> (<i>Une Parisienne à Chicago</i>) par Madame Léon Grandin. Le livre a été traduit par Mary Beth Raycraft. Le but de cet article est de découvrir la ville de Chicago à travers les yeux d'une Parisienne du 19ème siècle.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: center;">Avant de commencer la lecture du livre, je voulait comprendre pourquoi une dame comme Madame Léon Grandin voulait aller aux Etats-Unis. L'auteure note que Madame Grandin était très riche et qu'elle a faisait partie de la classe bourgeoise. Mais, Madame Grandin écrit comme si elle était un enfant, avec des yeux grands ouverts. Elle était curieuse. Je voulais vraiment comprendre la cause de cette curiosité. Je me souviens que j'ai lu un livre intitulé </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: center;">De la démocratie en Amérique</i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: center;"> par de Toqueville où il écrit de la vie américaine et l'avenir des Etats-Unis. Il écrit du rapport entre les Américains et les Européens quand il note: </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Il y a un type de mysticisme qui entoure les Etats-Unis et c'est clair que cela est la motivation du voyage de Madame Grandin. La traductrice est d'accord et elle écrit dans l'introduction. Elle écrit dans l'introduction qu'il y a beaucoup d'aspects de la ville de Chicago qui ont surpris les visiteurs français. Par exemple, la taille de la ville (cinq fois la taille de Paris), la hauteur des gratte-ciel (Chicago a inventé le premier gratte ciel) la culture et les politiques de la ville et des Etats-Unis en général intéressaient les Français. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">J'ai visité le Musée de l'Histoire de Chicago (Chicago History Museum) afin de mieux comprendre l'histoire et la grandeur de cette exposition. L'Exposition universelle se tient du 1er mai 1893 au 3 octobre 1893. Le thème principal de l'exposition était la découverte de l'Amérique par Christophe Colombe. Le décor et l'architecture des batîments ont donné à l'exposition le surnom la "ville blanche". Tristement, cette ville blanche a brûlé en 1894.</span><br />

héritage qu’une seule plaque. J’ai fait des recherches et j’ai trouvé un musée,
appelé <a href="http://www.dusablemuseum.org/">Le Musée Du Sable</a>. j’y suis allé et j’ai découvert que c’est vrai que Du
Sable représente plus qu’un fondateur. Le thème du Musée Du Sable est l’histoire afro-a</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">méricaine. Il y avait beaucoup de photos, de tableaux, de monuments, et
d’objets historiques qui représentent la lutte des esclaves noirs aux États-Unis et ailleurs. Je suis entré dans la première salle, appelée la salle des
fondateurs. La salle affiche le début du musée et son expansion. A mon
avis, la croissance du musée est similaire à la croissance de la ville après Du
Sable. Il y a une affiche qui présente Du Sable et ses paroles de sagesse:
“What will your legacy be?” Voilà, en un instant, j'ai compris l'héritage de Du Sable. Ce n'est ni une plaque, ni un musée. L’histoire de Du
Sable représente l'histoire de la ville entière de Chicago. C'est l’idée que quelqu’un, n'importe son ethnicité, peut changer le monde.</span><br />

l’histoire de </a><a href="http://chicagohs.org/">Chicago</a>. Il y avait beaucoup d’information au sujet de Du Sable
et les fondateurs de Chicago. Je pense que ma salle préférée est <a href="http://photos.innersource.com/group/15689/Dioramas">la salle des Dioramas</a>. Il y a plus de 8 dioramas qui montre l’histoire de Chicago. Il y
a un diorama de la cabane de Du Sable, un diorama du grand feu de Chicago,
et d’autres dioramas comme le diorama de l’exposition à Chicago de 1893. On peut voir la évolution de Chicago au cours des 19ème et 20ème siècles. Cette progression est possible à cause des contributions de Du Sable.</span><br />

Baptiste Pointe du Sable s'est installé à Chicago à partir de 1790. Cependant,
qu'est-ce qui s'est passé entre 1673, l'exploration de la région de
Chicago par Jacques Marquette et Louise Jolliet, et l'année quand Du Sable s'est
installé à Chicago? Pendant les explorations du Moyen-ouest par Jolliet, Marquette, et la
Salle, Ils ont réclamé le territoire au nom de la France. est très controversé. Dans son livre, <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=nQp_tEiEvbQC&printsec=frontcover&dq=wau-bun&hl=fr&sa=X&ei=uBtFT86rHsPXgQe2oOy6BA&ved=0CDIQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=wau-bun&f=false">Juliette Kinzie</a> raconte une histoire d'un
homme appelé Jean Baptiste Point-au-Sable, un homme de couleur, né en
Saint-Domingue. Elle écrit que les Amérindiens diraient très simplement que le
premier habitant blanc de la ville de Chicago était en fait un nègre libre.<span class="MsoFootnoteReference">[5]</span>

Pont DuSable. Ils regardent la rivière Chicago, le lac Michigan, les
gratte-ciels, et le passage de chaque automobile. Cependant, le pont a aussi
une histoire importante et se compose de beaucoup de références historiques.
Pendant le week-end je l'ai visité afin de mieux comprendre
l'histoire de ces monuments et leur pertinence à la ville de Chicago. Hélas,
j'ai découvert entre autres que le pont a été nommé après le premier résident de
Chicago, Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable. En plus, il raconte l'histoire des

bronze qui dépeint un bateau de voyageurs, dont Jacques Marquette et Louis
Jolliet. La plaque affiche les mots qui pourraient se traduire par, "En l'honneur de Louis Jolliet et du Père Jacques
Marquette." À droite, elle note: "Les premiers blancs
à passer par la rivière Chicago le 1er septembre 1673." A mon avis, la
plaque essaie de raconter une histoire; c'est l'histoire de Louis Jolliet, le grand homme puissant qui se lève au dessus de tous et l'histoire du "petit" père Marquette qui est très modeste. Ensemble, ils conquièrent le lac
Michigan, en naviguant seulement en petit canot. La ville de Chicago et" La
Société Illinois des dames coloniales" ont consacré la plaque en 1925 et

fini de faire le tour de ce grand pont. Cependant, il y avait une chose de plus à voir: la sculpture des fondateurs de Chicago. La sculpture est étonnante.
Elle est très grande et raconte une histoire épique des Amérindiens, des
explorateurs, de l'amitié, de l'honneur, et de la conquête. Louis Jolliet
est au centre avec le Père Marquette. On voit un ange au dessus d'eux. Les
Amérindiens paraissent encore inférieures. L'un d'eux se trouve aux pieds de
Jolliet. Jolliet et Marquette paraissent bienfaisants mais au même
temps, supérieurs aux Amérindiens. Ils détiennent des épées tandis que les
Amérindiens détiennent des arcs et des flèches. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">La ville de <a href="http://www.visite-usa.fr/villes/chicago.htm">Chicago</a> compte environ 3 millions d'habitants et est la troisième plus grande ville des Etats-Unis. De nos jours, la ville est bien connue pour ses gratte-ciels, sa population, et ses pizzas "deep dish". </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Cependant, Chicago n'a pas toujours eu ce profil.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> Au début du dix-septième siècle, Chicago comprenait surtout une population d'Amérindien qui habitait au milieu de la faune des prairies. Ce n'est qu'en 1673 que Louis Jolliet et le Père Jacques Marquette, un explorateur canadien et un prêtre Jésuite, explorèrent cette région pendant leur voyage vers le grand fleuve Mississippi. </span></div>

<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Lors de cette période, en 1608, les Français, sous l’aile de <a href="http://www.museeprotestant.org/Pages/Notices.php?scatid=136&noticeid=664&lev=1&Lget=FR">Pierre Dugua de Mons</a> et <a href="http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/articles/fr/samuel-de-champlain">Samuel de Champlain</a> ont fondé la ville de Québec.</span></span><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> Québec faisait partie de la Nouvelle France et sa</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> population vivait de la vente de fourrures. L'intendant de la Nouvelle France, à cette époque, s'appelait <a href="http://www.statcan.gc.ca/about-apercu/jt-fra.htm">Jean Talon</a>. Il a découvert que les Anglais contrôlaient la richesse dans l'est et qu'une voie fluviale, vers le sud, pouvait être un moyen de gagner de l'argent et de freiner l'expansion des Anglais vers l'ouest. Il a aussi prévu qu'une voie fluviale, vers l'ouest, pourrait peut-être se jeter dans l'océan Pacifique. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Il a écrit à un homme, appelé <a href="http://www.civilisations.ca/musee-virtuel-de-la-nouvelle-france/les-explorateurs/louis-jolliet-1673-1694/">Louis Joliet</a>, homme qui est né à Québec en 1645, et connu comme un excellent coureur des bois et cartographe. Le but de l'expédition était la découverte du fleuve que les Amérindiens appelaient <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=y33sv1PPg1QC&lpg=PA5&ots=LUZO-gs4c6&dq=louis%20jolliet%20the%20%22great%20river%22%20mississippi&hl=fr&pg=PA5#v=onepage&q=louis%20jolliet%20the%20%22great%20river%22%20mississippi&f=false"><la grande rivière></a>. On pensait à cette époque que la grand rivière, connue aujourd'hui comme le fleuve Mississippi, se jettait dans l'océan Pacifique. Louis Jolliet a accepté la demande, et il a fondé une société avec quelques hommes d'origine québécoise et un prêtre catholique francais, appelé Père Jacques Marquette.</span></div>

Il est né en 1637 à Laon, France. Louis Joliet et son groupe ont commencé leur expédition au Wisconsin à la recherche du fleuve Mississippi. Ils suivirent le fleuve vers l'Arkansas avant de se rendre compte qu'ils voyageaient trop au sud. Ils craignaient d'être capturés par les Espagnols ou les Amérindiens donc ils ont fait demi-tour. Cependant, le courant du fleuve Mississippi était trop fort, donc les Amérindiens lui ont montré un autre fleuve. Marquette et Joliet suivirent ce fleuve jusqu'à ce qu'ils arrivent à une région tout près du lac Michigan où Chicago se situe aujourd'hui.
